Does one need to apply for International License if he or she plans to drive in the US just for vacation? As I heard from some friends, it is not necessaty to apply for Int'l Driving License if you are currently holding HKG driving license for driving no longer than 6 months. Anyone had such experience would like to hear your comment.
Thanks

You can use your home country's driving licence. I have been going to US regularly and able to rent cars for 1-3 weeks stay.
Based on treaties and reciprocal agreement, a long list of countries' driving licences are honored in US for short trips, but licences need to be printed in English Language. Read up on their road signage and traffic regulations.

Thank you both.
How can I check about the list of countries? I enquired with transport department, they told me 'better have' international license. To me, better have means not a must. But just want to make sure it is alright if we go without one. Anywhere I can find the proper information, been googling but to no avail.
Appreciate your responses.

It's an easy HKD80 for the Transport Department (the charge for the International Permit), so they would tell you to get it. There is some useful information in the following link.

If I plan to rent a car overseas, I usually go to the websites of the car rental companies in that country and check what their rental requirements are. They usually provide information regarding which driving licences are or are not recognised.

Go to the FAQ in US Consulate website.

Driver's licenses accepted in the United States are:
* Any license issued by any US state, territory or possession.
* A license issued by a Canadian province.
* A license issued by a country that participated in the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic or the 1943 Convention on the Regulation of Inter-American Automobile Traffic (Both Hong Kong and Macau are signatories to the 1949 Convention on Road Traffic).
Avis or Hertz websites will also have some information.
