does anyone have any home remedies that can help relieve a bad cough that is chesty & sometimes "phlemy". He's on drugs prescribed by doc. The cough makes him gag & sometimes even vomit, very painful to watch. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

No home remedies. My 9 months old baby just recovered from a horrible cough and cold. Yes, the meds will make his cough more productively and he will vomit and after that he will be able to sleep a little better when the phlegm is out from his throat. It was painful to watch but after my baby's second time cough, I much prefered that he will vomit when he cough especially just before his evening sleeping time, he was able to sleep much longer before the phlegm builds up again. Continue to take the meds as the meds help to make the cough more productive and eventually it will be better. My Dr. friend told me to follow the meds time exactly and when he is still having slightest cough or runny nose, bring him back to the doctor again so he/she can check his improvement. i did exactly and the cough and cold gone much sooner than i was expected. Get metholatum for kids, get a little out to put it in a handkie and slip it under his shirt or grobag near his chest, it will help him a bit too.

It is very painful to watch - I lost so much of weight staying up all night and day to 'help' him. He is now eating, sleeping and laughing well again, what a delight to see. oh, he has gone taller and look more like a little boy than baby after the cough and cold. Moms, stay strong for your babies!

my nine month old is coughing and he threw up for the first time yesterday. totally agree. very painful to watch.

as far as homeremedies go,

i add eucalyptus oil to his bath water and it seems to help a bit.

also i read chicken soup is good for colds and coughts, so i give him as much as possible with his food.

I am not sure if anyone here believe in Chinese medicine. There is something you can get from Chinese herbal shop. It is a little white pearl like substance call "Chuen Pui". The way I use it is to ask the shop keeper to ground it. It cost about $60 -80 for just over an ounce. I usually steam using one-third of it in a bowl of water for about 30 - 45 mins. ( I use a porcelain container with lid) Again divide the end result into three times. Add honey to it and serve it to my baby like western medicine (except that I serve it warm). I usually serve it three times a day (when he gets up in the morning, once in the afternoo and once before bedtime) It certainly ease the cough. The good thing about this is that it is very mild and yet effective.

Sometimes even cure it. The problem is that if you do not speak Cantonese yourself , you might need a Cantonese speaking friend to help you in the shop.
