No it's not, not unless you have gone through the proper channels and have a China plate. To do this you need a HK closed area permit, a GD security bureau permit, a SZ driving license and finally a China plate. Prices for China plates are around HK$500,000 and to get one you also need a business address in China. Applies only to cars and trucks and not motorcycles.

Me too, WoDer, please tell us how to get this special permit.
About a year ago, I searched far and wide to find a way get China plate for HK registered car. The only method I found was what evildeeds mentioned, and even at the cost of over 1/2 million it is very hard to do. I have even asked a friend who worked in the SZ city government, and no easy answers.
So if there really is an easy way, please let us know.

WoDer, I think you misunderstood my (and evildeeds) question. We are not asking if you can drive "a car" in China. You only need an international drivers license for that. I am looking for a way to drive my own car from HK to China. I am positive you need a China plate to drive a car across border, and I know a few people who have them. The border guards will not let your car through if you don't have one. The only exception maybe Hong Kong government vehicle.

Exactly, we now have 6 cars with China plates and plenty of contacts in the GD government. The only exception that they have granted is that for cars driving through to race or participate in track days in Zhuhai. Even then they are "escorted". I have never seen a car in China with an HK plate only and we are driving through many times a week. Our contact at the China consulate has never heard of this also.

I assume you mean buying a car in China? Yes to both although there are quite strict requirements for motorcycle licenses and there are certain areas in SZ where motorcycles are banned (due to drive by thefts a few years ago).
