Legal rights of a stepmom

I have been living with my boyfriend and his son for several years now and am planning to get married. I am just wondering if I will then legally have the rights same as a parent? So here's my questions -

1. If I get married, will I automatically have the rights legally over the kid's welfare?

2. If we remain co-habited but not married, how can I obtain such rights?

3. Does it have anything to do with "legal guardian"? If so, how to apply?

MANY MANY THANKS!!

I think you need to legally adopt your stepchild to have legal rights as a parent.

That is correct and that also requires the consent of the other biological parent if still alive.

Yes this is true even an unmarried father who is separated and paying child support has no legal rights so a step parent certainly wont have any.
