DIY repair - Wooden furniture

ORIGINAL POST

I have an old dresser (over 50 years old but by no means quality antique piece) that has sentimental value.

Went to the furniture stores along Queen's Road East in Wanchai and spoken to a number of contractors. Can't seem to be able to get anybody interested in giving it a new finish.

I wouldn't mind giving it a go in doing it except I need someone to show/tell me what to do.

Anybody out there who can give me some advice?

Thanks

It has lost its lustre. So here is question out of total ignorance.

Sanding - is it done with sand paper? Coarse or fine type? I assume I need to sand away the surface paint, right?

How do I go about with the finish? Paint or something else? I'd prefer a matt finish.

Thanks everyone.
