Can anybody explain to me how the taxi business works in HK?
Is this like in Europe where they buy their own taxi license, their own car & are like small companies?
or do they rent a taxi car from a taxi company for a daily fee?
Reason why I'm asking is that one can negotiate their meter fee (20% discount, etc..), so I guess that they are not taxed on the "metered sales report"....

It is illegal for taxi drivers to offer a fare different from the meter (ie negotiate), but it is not illegal for passengers to ask for a lower fare (or discount on tunnel fees or paying only one way tunnel fee).
Some other people have phone numbers to call for discounted taxi fares (especially to the airport or to arrange daily pickups).

The drivers rent their taxis at a fixed price which is around HKD 500. As Starlionblue2 said everything above that is profit. The taxi licenses are around HKD 2.7mio which is a major investment. The car itself is around HKD 250,000.

If taxi drivers pay for the fuel, how do they account for the fuel in the tank at the end of a shift?
