wonder if anyone can give some advice. We have a 12 weeks old boy - who likes the sound of his own voice! especially in the evening when we try to put him to bed. he screams and screams - we have a nighttime routine - massage, bath, then bottle, burp and bed but when we come to put him down (or simetimes if he falls asleep wiht th ebottle and then wakes up) he screams and screas - try giving him some more milk - and sometimes he takes a few sips and then arches his back and pushed the bottle out. try burping - nothing coming out - try holding and swaying - sometimes works -till you try to put him down again! he wont take a dummy....sometimes a push around in a stroller (last resort) will work but dont want to get into that habit! we try to be calm an dnot jumping from one thing to another etc....he is getting better - before he woudl scream till 10pm (from 7) sometimes later - now it is only till 8.30 usually.....any tips...i know they say it is a stage but he is 12 weeks now and dont really see much improvment - any other ideas? should i change his forumla that he has at night (BF during the day) he is having s26. ...any tips welcome!!! thanks

My baby boy ( he's now 11mth ) use to be the same, every day he would cry and scream from 8pm till 11pm, I believe it's probably colic ( although this is my guess) we tried everything from gripe water to massage, still the same. Good news is it's just a phase they go thru. So I guess for now you just have to bear with it. Try to cuddle him a bit more, sometimes that helps!!

thanks - have just got him to sleep - 10pm....was being optimistic when i said 8.30 earlier! been to the doc they say its colic - but that doesnt really help as the drops he gave him dont make any difference! everyone says it will pass .....hope it will soon! thanks...

Colic is very annoying. We were lucky and avoided it. My friend had a colicky daughter. They tried acupuncture and it seemed to help. Of course I had to have to following conversation with him.
Me - "You stick needles in your baby?"
Him - "It sounds different when you say it like that."
I feel your pain. We are so used to broken sleep that an uninterrupted night is quite the oddity.

my boy had colic for a month and cried about 4 hrs every evening. the first few times you think you are going to go insane, it's so demanding on your ears and patience. if you have been to the doc and he is sure there's nothing seriously wrong with him then it's somehing you unfortunately just have to endure and cope with. ear plugs help. i tried calm music, some soothing tunes you can sing to, the cd would play over and over, but it's kind of therapy to sooth your aching brain. (a glass of red also helps wonders. the drops didnt do anything for us. i used to carry him about on his belly across my arm and try and keep calm as they also feed off your stress and become more stressed. which i am sure you know.
all i can say is at some point it stopped like a switch on/off. although he is 2 and still doesnt sleep through or in his own bed, but that's another story....
ps i sent u a PM about tsing yi...
good luck

"If this screaming is following a bottle feeding of formulae then I think you can pretty much say there is a problem with the formulae."
Not necessarily. Trying a different formula is definitely an option, but children can have colic regardless.

Hi there, he might be overtired? With regards to taking a dummy, our little one wouldn't take one either until someone suggested trying a cherry teat type. I could only find these at Mothercare but she loved it!!! I know some people don't agree with using dummies but it was a life saver just to have some peace for a while and it seemed to settle her. We also had problems with formula, we changed to a lactose free formula called O-Lac which is much lighter and whilst it helped her tummy problems it didn't really satisfy her and she wanted to be fed every 2-3 hours. Have you tried Colief drops?

my baby didn't really suffer from colic on a regular basis but would have some nights that he cried and feeding didn't necessarily stop him crying. my mum would sit with the baby wrapped around her stomach, so baby's stomach was held against hers quite firmly. this used to calm him down i guess because of the warmth and the pressure....
hope it passes soon. hang in there.

Sucking does activate the gastrocolic reflex in babies so it does make sense that it could help.

thanks for all your replies - we have had him tested and he is not lactose introlerant so we can rule that one out.....hopefully it will all pass soon!

Hi qwerty123, good news that he's not lactose intolerant. Can I ask how your little one was tested. Our baby can only stomach lactose free milk but we've never had her tested to see if she is indeed lactose intolerant and I would be interested to find out more about getting her tested. Thanks in advance. Hope the colic is improving, definately give a cherry teat dummy a go, he might like them, our little one spat out every other dummy!

Getting them to suck seemed to relax my second one. As he also was a wee screamer at night. but he wouldn't take a dummy and just putting more milk into his tummy was actually bad for him anyway and caused worse gas and pain. So I put honey on the end of a dummy and he'd suck on that.....
This is a last resort time and these things call for any and all possible cures right! So try some honey on a dummy to get him sucking for a few minutes when your ears need a break.
2nd most important thing I did......I slept baby on his tummy and that helped so much! easier for him to release the gas through his system that way.
It is not recommended but if your baby does a lot of back arching he has probably got a very strong neck and back already and I found it perfectly safe for my son as long as you don't have any blankets or anything int he cot that could cover his face.
Good luck.

thanks to you all.... it was a stool test that the doc did to see if he was lactose intolerant...will try to find a cherry dummy and give that a go! thanks and happy new year to you all
