Any idea on the kind of cheese to introduce? Is cheddar too salty to start with?

Thanks.

Probably too salty yes. Salt is bad for little kidneys.

How about Jarlsberg? Or a French "Petit Fromage" (similar to Yoghurt).

Some Wellcomes and Park n Shop, City Super, Taste, Great. It's not that unusual. A common "petit fromage" brand is "Petit Miam". They look like little yogurt jars.

We started cheese with our toddler around 10 months, we started with cheddar but he likes a lot of different types now.

We never bought 'baby cheese' or anything special - just full fat cheese from the deli counter.

Since all the other food is homemade without salt, the salt in cheese was not an issue for us and it is a great healthy snack.

I started my baby on cheese quite early i think around 7.5months. i found a president brand of cheese cubes that are similar to cream cheese and not at all salty.

i add one to pasta cooked very soft and a bit liquidy.

parmesan cheese is also supposed to be the healthiest, so yu can grate a teaspoon into his food. we started to do this even earlier.

my baby loves his pasta with cheese.

I started cheddar with my baby at about 8 months. Grated cheddar sprinkled & melted into his pasta and he really likes it. Annabel Karmel also suggests Gruyere cheese as a good start though I haven't tried yet, apparently it's more mild & sweeter.

Her books are quite good for baby/toddler recipes. But she doesn't beat our helper, the gourmet chef of the baby world. :)

i know this is an old thread, but i have a burning question about cheese for babies;

normal cheese for adults have a lot of salt, and japanese 'baby' cheese (QBB) has no salt but emulsifier.

which is worse? salt or emulsifier?

frenchfries, I think as long as it is in moderation, there is no problem either way.

Also watch out for any lactose intolerance issues. If baby farts a lot, cut back on the dairy and see if it helps.

axptguy38,

thanks for ur input. my 9.5 month old has been eating dairy for a couple of months and he has no lactose intolerance issues. i took a look at petit miam as well, but it has sugar..

what is 'moderation', though? some days he would have yogurt AND cheese. is this too much?

Well, I'm not an expert, but if the kid is ok and behaves normally then it's fine. In matters like this, common sense works. Yogurt and cheese on the same day are fine. Nutrition is not an average over a day, but over several days.

Kids are more tolerant than we, as parents, often think. ;)

Petit Miam is fine too. Sugar, sure. But if that's all the sugar in one day it's no biggie. Of course, if you don't want to get into the HABIT of sugary things, stay off that (and fruit juice).
