Loan sharks?

ORIGINAL POST

Our previous domestic helper took out a loan and unbeknownst to us and against our direct mandate gave our home phone number as her contact. She has been long gone but her loan "company" continues to call our home several times a day. In the beginning there was actually a human being on the other end and both my wife and I told the collector that she is no longer at this address and told them to never call here again. Obviously they did or both of us wouldn't have had the opportunity to give this message. Soon after I gave them a tongue lashing they turned it over to an automated call so we have no recourse to request that they stop disturbing us. The recording only says "OWD" at the end after saying "Repay your loan immediately." After serious inquiry to locate this business it appears as if it is a front for some underground network. They certainly don't want to be found. No number is listed with PCCW nor online anywhere. Has anyone encountered such a problem or even hear of "OWD (HK) Ltd"? We are desperate to end these bothersome calls. Buisness Registry says they are a registered company but they will not give any information, and I found their address at Wang Tao House, Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po but no floor or flat number when I Googled them. When I tried to find their physical location the management says they must be registered as an individual rather than a business and to "call the police" or the Telecommunications Authority. Both will be lengthy procedures. Any other suggestions? Kind regards, Frustrated Phone Philanthropist

i presume they are calling you anonymously? in which case you can ask PCCW to block callers that withold their number.

I used to get unwanted calls, usually from sales people or the like, so I subscribed to this service and I have finally peace and quiet!

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions! GREATLY appreciated. I'm going the "Report Nuisance Caller" route first, then if it doesn't resolve we'll check on the subscription service with PCCW (cost?), and then we might consider changing our number but we have had it 8 yrs now and loathe the idea of losing it. Again, thanks everyone! BM

For anyone following my case now I'm getting calls from the police to ON TOP of the OWD calls because the "Report Nuisance Callers" files with the local police station. I think I'll go the PCCW route next week. Still suffering!

I still do not know what OWD is. As I said in my initial post (read it....it is very thorough) I am sure they are a lending agency of some sort but I do not know the acronym. I can venture a guess of "Overseas Worker ???" only because I have seen other companies with similar names.

The police are calling to follow up on the online report that I filed following the suggestion of a previous post. Great suggestion but once I saw it involved the police I knew it would require hours of my time and weeks if not months to solve. Thanks!

I don't think it's OWD (HK) Ltd but OWT (HK) Ltd. or OWTel. OWT is One World Telecom. They did the same to me when my helper got their services. This is a post paid telecommunication service. Their office is in Central or Sheung Wan.

I had to change my telephone number so they and the lending companies my maid has gotten into a deal with could no longer call. I also had this thing activated so when my maid calls someone my phone number will not appear in their phones. Therefore, she wouldn't know what my new number is. I am now living at peace in my own home.

I will try to look for the address and telephone number of OWT or OWTel for you.

That is very kind Miggy. I was certain that the recording said OWD but what you say makes sense. I'm not happy just changing me number, etc. I want to give someone some advice about their business model and inconsideration. If you do find out where they are and/or a contact number then let me know. Meanwhile I'm going to look myself. Regards, B

I'm ahead of you. I'm now convinced this is the company. Their main office is in the Hopewell building, Wanchai, 30th floor. Unless their HK website is incorrect. I tried to phone them but I believe I am after business hours. I'll try again tomorrow. In the meantime I'm emailing them. Thank you again and I hope I can get them off our back, BM
