If it's an HP, I had a similar problem when fax function packed up but all the others were fine. If I recall correctly, the service centre rep suggested over the phone a price which was roughly the same cost as a new (albeit cheaper) model just to look at it, with no guarantee it could be repaired. So I went out and bought a new one. No waiting, and I didn't have to lug it to and from their repair centre. :(
