My neighbors smoke, which of course they have the right to do in their own flat. The problem is the smoke is coming into my flat. I have asthma, and since these neighbors moved in, my asthma has been noticeably worse. We already have 7 air purifiers running 24/7, but it hasn't helped.
Any advice on how to keep the smoke away?

How is it getting into the flat? If it's leaky doors and windows insulation strips work. If you can't fund that several layers of gaffa/duct tape are an option.

The smoke seems to be coming out of their front door through the common hallway and in through our front door - I think in and out through the sides of the doors.

Maybe an electric fan directing a stream of air at the door?

if you've got ventilation fans in the kitchen and bathroom running, and no windows open, you'll create negative pressure in the house, and air will be sucked in from around your front door. Install sticky foam tape weatherstrip around the inner edges of the door frame (instructions are on the box), then open a window just a crack to relieve the pressure...

seal off the front door with foam strips available at most home stores like japan home also use a rubber strip for tye bottom of the door. Cheap and easy to do your self

as 190K says seal off with foam or insulation tape (not too difficult a DIY job if it really is affecting you plus will make it less tormenting). more importantly if the smoke is in the corridor/common hallway, then take the complaint up with the management office.

thats right rice...the smoker should be forced to seal IN the smoke so as not to bother others...not likely to happen in this culture of fear of insulting others i'm afraid tho...

Inform your management office. Since the smoke reside in the common area, your management office could do something about it - probably purify the enviornment.

Thanks so much for the suggestions. Have contacted the management and they are trying to help. The funny thing is my neighbors are now denying they smoke!!

"The funny thing is my neighbors are now denying they smoke!!"
Funny and so very very Chinese. ;) They are now afraid to lose face, or aware they have already done so. So they're in "denial" mode.

Lets get serious here. Smoke is somehow drifting under and around your neighbours doors, drifting accross the common area and sneaking into your apartment? Yet the "haze" outside of the apartment is not causing you any grief?

'Let's get serious here'???? The original poster has 7 air purifiers and is doing everything possible to control the air inhaled at home. Nobody said that the 'haze' is not causing any grief; it's just that short of leaving HK, we an do very little to change that. Moonbear's problem is that regardless of how much action they take at home, their 'refuge' is bring spoiled by the smoke from next door. As another asthmatic; inhaling second hand smoke has a much more immediate effect on my health than the air pollution.

Thanks again for the great comments and support. mum of 2, sounds like you have experienced similar challenges.
carboni668, the point about the haze is well noted - I used to be an avid runner, but the pollution in HK is so hard on my asthma, I'm relegated to the indoor treadmill. I put in a complaint to management. Still waiting for them to get back to me. ;)

What about offering your neighbors the "tape" or whatever it is they can use to seal the fumes inside their flat.... just pretend you got offered some extra when buying some from yourself and that you'd be happy if they could use it instead of having it wasted... even offer them to install it for them (if it's simple) at the same time as you do it for your own flat.... No face lost, just nice neighbour relationship...
