Hi,

Can anyone recommend somewhere/one who does a good pedicure and uses a razor to remove any dead and dry skin, instead of just scrubbing??

Cheers

I go to a place on Caine Road where they do the Shanghai style pedicure with the razor blade and they charge only $180.

The place I'm talking about is just past the 7-Eleven, Il Bel Paese Italian shop, by the steps leading down to Peel Street. There's a newspaper stand in front of a real estate agent, a cobbler, then there's a doorway leading up some stairs. It's on the 1st floor.

Be careful with the hygiene aspect when it comes to the cheaper places, especially with razors!

Sandie, definitely try it out. I've been many times and there's nothing to worry about from a hygiene point of view. If there was, I wouldn't go there myself.

Can recommend Happy Foot think they have 3 branches 2 in Central and I in Happy Valley. They do a great reasonably priced Shanghai Pedicure and always have a good selection of mags too!!

I remembered to look at the name of the place on Caine Road when I was going past it this morning, and it's called Gao's Foot Massage.

A question for all of you out there who do the razor pedicure: how has it affected the regrowth of hard skin? I started going to a place in Central two years ago, and when I leave after the full treatment of cutting and buffing, my feet look and feel beautiful and brand new. However, hard skin grows back more and more quickly, so that now I have lumps of callous everywhere a week or two after the treatment. People tell me that this is what happens and that the razor treatment should therefore be avoided. Is there any way to reverse or stop the process?

Hi mamadavid,

Hard skin is developed to protect the skin surface. I would suggest you look at the shoes you are wearing, try not to wear the same pair too often. Would also suggest that you moisturise you feet at night to help soften the skin. And use a gel insert in your shoes.

I have been using Razor/Shanghainese pedicure for the last 8 years, with no problem, and I am on my feet for hours.

Marmadavid,

I absolutely agree with Sandie. I usually don't wear the same pair of shoes two days in a row and I moisturise every day. I find my heels are worse in the summer time when I'm wearing strappy shoes a lot as the heels don't have the support from a closed shoe. Once a week, before you go to bed, soak your feet in a bowl of warm water and add some olive oil, then rub some foot cream - L'Occitane make an excellent one - then put on some cotton socks and your feet will be feeling lovely and smooth the next day.

Sandie, did you try the place on Caine Road?

Long time ago, a professional medical pedicurist (yes, you have to get a medical diploma for that in france, they can also operate ingrown nails, make orthopedic shoe insoles, etc.) told me that using razor only to dispose of the dead skin (not the normal one) is the best way as 'abrasion' (repeated frictions of the pumice, clapping of shoes & flip flop, etc.) induce extra hard skin growth. The same also may happen if razor cuts too much skin (including "fresh one"): as a reaction, hard skin grows.

His advice was razor from time to time, careful not to take off too much skin and hydration, preferably with shea butter.

He also told to avoid "urea" based lotions, as they increase only temporarily hydration, but in the long term, urea is damaging to the skin
