I have an odd problem with my desktop: it continually acts as if 1 left-click is actually a double click. Very irritating as menus will not drop down, can't select items, etc. right click operates properly... I have changed mouse to no effect, and have gone into control panel settings to change speed/sensitivity settings also to no effect. Anyone have any ideas? wondering if it is some sort of ad-based virus I have picked up? Am almost ready to re-format as it is frustrating...

I presume you've tried changing button assignments in your mouse settings back and forth a few times?
(Assuming XP or Vista) You can try right clicking on the mouse in device manager and doing "uninstall", then rebooting. On boot the mouse driver will automatically be reinstalled and any wonkyness should go away.
