Indeed, Domestic Helper's quarters. If you don't have a helper, I guess it makes a nice storage space. The room size will normally range from about 2x2 meters to about 2x1.5. Just big enough for a bed and not much else. There is typically an attached bathroom.

The world is originally European, Portuguese with Latin roots in fact, but is only widely used in South East Asia and India nowadays.
Swedish has a related word, "Amma", which is both the verb for breastfeeding and the noun for wet nurse.
