Moving milk feeds to a cup?

My baby will turn 1 yr at end feb. Many books suggest that baby should be "happily" drinking milk from a cup by one. Question : how realistic is this?

We have the following milk feeds :

morning - 4 oz (follow by cereal & fruit on hi chair)

tea time - 9 oz

bedtime - 9 oz

How should I start? Do I just suddenly give all these milk feeds in a cup? He's familiar with a sippy cup, which he has been drinking water from since 6 mths.

Questions :-

- do I use the same cup?

- do I give in a semi-reclining position as in bottles?

Seems like it would take a long time to finish 9 oz in a cup & an even longer time for him to keep his head up/tilted if not reclined? What to do?

I wouldn't do the semi reclining. It's not a natural cup position. Also I would start with some other fluid in a cup, like water. Then move on to milk. Finally, you don't have to move all the feeds to a cup. The morning one seems like a good candidate. Trying a new thing just before bedtime is bound to cause problems.

When are babies supposed to go off bottles entirely then? He has been happily drinking water & diluted juice from his sippy cup since 6 mths. I'm just wondering if "milk in a cup" is one of those development things I need to start "training" or would I end up with difficult weaning toddler. I'm quite happy keeping the way he is and he seems content as well. ?

Our daughter (27 months) only gets a bottle before naptime and before bedtime. It's a comfort thing. She knows it's only then. I don't think weaning her will be a real issue but we haven't thought about it yet.

As for other occasions, somewhere between 12 and 18 months is probably a good time.

The AAP, doctor and dentists tend to agree that at 12 months the bottle shold stop and should be replaced by a cup ( sippy cup and/or cup with a straw)

For us, the cup with the straw was magic after 2-3 days of a thirsty baby.

There is another thread on this worth looking at in the past couple of days.

Some children just take to the cup, others are creatures of comfort and like to stick with the bottle. My son was a "whatever" child and happily swapped to a sippy cup without any hassle at 14months when I switched him from formula to cows milk, we used the Tommee Tippee one where you get the flow by biting the teat, he never got to grips with the non-spill cups until he was much older. I used to sit him on my lap and he just leaned back into me like a recliner. Worked for us but like I said every child is different.
