STOP Pedigree & Wildlife trade on Pet classified - a discussion

Browsing through Asiaxpat pet section today, I was disturbed seeing posts selling pedigree puppies and African Congo Grey Parrot baby.


SPCA HK puts down 20k+ dogs annually, along with AFCD of HKSAR Government puts down whatever number of stray and abandoned animals.


Few people appreciate that the lifespans of Congo Grey Parrots often reaches 50 to 80 yrs. It is listed as a "Near Threaten" species because of habitat destruction and capture for wildlife trade and international trade is restricted under CITES.


I write to start a discussion on whether Asiaxpat should continue to facilitate as a venue for such trade.

Good points. The SPCA, HK Dog Rescue and other organizations have been invited to post photos of all of their pets onto our site. We have nearly 250,000 unique visitors on our HK site each month so if an organization is serious about finding homes for pets they should be spending the time to post ads with photos on our classifies - if they are not then I suggest that any concerned members get in touch with the various orgs and ask why they are not (or perhaps volunteer to assist with helping load the ads for them).


With regard to the parrot, if we find someone is trying to run a business selling parrots on our site (we do our best to monitor such things - if we see the same ad over and over the red flag goes up) we would remove the ad. We do not want our site being used to promote endangered animals being pulled out of the wild for sale.


If someone has purchased a pet and it is not illegal to own such a species, then we would allow the ad to remain. To disallow such ads might result in the person releasing the bird into the city where it would likely end up dead.

There are only a couple of categories in our classifieds that cost to post - Pets is not one of them.


We are recoding the sites to dotnet in the near future and will sort out all these minor issues at that time

I agree with rl06. I frequently get angry when I read about people trying to get rid of their pets because they are moving away.


Today there is a post about bulldog puppies which are being advertised as Valentine's day presents! How awful! They are animals, not toys.


If only breeders and owners were more responsible, the SPCA, AFCD kennels and HKDR would not be full of animals abandoned by their families.

Ed, how about a Charity Dog and Cat category for these charities?
