How to avoid burning during baking

ORIGINAL POST

Hi I just moved into a new apartment which comes with a non fan oven. Every time I baked - from chicken to muffin, the top is always burnt before they got cooked inside. I tried to change to a lower rack and used a lower temperature but still doesn't work. Any advice?

I would agree with gazmo28. That oven isn't the best.

Sorry if that isn't very helpful.

Try covering loosely with foil and remove a few minutes before to brown the top. Make sure your oven is preheated too

I've been baking in my non-fan oven since we moved to HK 3 years ago and this works for me

I had an oven that used to do that. It had a dial that one could turn to only have heat coming from the bottom, only from the top(Broil) or both. I put it on bottom only until about 10 minutes before the end and would then put it on broil. Worked well as long as I paid attention.

My daughters once made me the most beautiful brownies...until I cut into them and found out they were only done on TOP! LOL.

Sounds like my oven! I never burned any of my baking with different ovens before, not until now.

I will try to use the tin foil to cover the top in the beginning and turn down the heat more...

Can you turn off the broiler?

Just checked - actually the broiler is not on if I select to use the oven so heat is coming from the bottom, but it just burn both the top and the bottom of the cake....

Try lowering the heat or covering with foil. If still unsuccessful, time to buy a new one if you want to continue baking
