What is this fruit?

I'm curious - my helper bought some fruit at the market today that I have never seen before. She doesn't know what it is either! They are about the size of a large passionfruit with a very thick red/brown coloured skin. When you cut them open there is white flesh inside and it has a small stone surrounded by more translucent flesh. Any ideas?? Thanks.

Is it a MAngostein? I had these in Thailand several years ago. They were very flabourful and sweet but I can't describe the taste.
