I would like to have a chat with one of western ladies having a chinese boss. Mine is driving me crazy. Maybe I need to understand some more of the culture here.

The actual thing is he is not open and never telling you the truth or at least only half of it, when working on a project togehter. Whenever he messes up something he tries to make it look that one of the employees messed up, saving his own a** towards the superiors.

I don.t know how the paging works, but any other experience would help. You know ladies sometimes it helps just to know that the other have the same destiny or are willing to listen a bit.

Thanks for listening,

I'm not exactly western but ABC..i also have a chinese boss which drives me absolutely crazy..he LOVES to criticize- nothing is ever good enough; i hate that he is SARCASTIC, if i do something wrong (which i admit i could be careless sometimes), instead of being honest and giving me hell, he'd make some sarcastic comment, and he loves doing that when there are others around..my colleagues said it's because he thinks i'm more tolerating for humiliation cos i'm relatively more 'westernized'. actually most of my colleagues are all overseas chinese (more or less) but he still manages to make everyone scared of him, which is a VERY 'chinese boss' thing.

My story is opposite. I am Chinese but has a western boss. He is very laid-back type. He does not give you any direction. He holds up all the important information so that you have to figure out all the work by yourself. I'm afraid that he has a lot of room to criticize me when somethings go wrong.

Strawberry,

I can feel what you mean. Not all Chinese boss are "bossy" or hypercritical but some are quite nasty. All I can suggest you to do is to vote by your foot. There is absolutely no prospect for you to stay with this boss when you have this kind of "rejection" feeling at heart. You'll feel like disastrous coming to office smiling at someone you deeply hate every day.

Mary 11,

I am British and had a Chinese boss for 2.5 years and can identify with you. If you want to chat privately please PM me and I would be happy to talk things through/ or lend a listening ear.

Keep your chin up!

Hi All,

Interesting thread - I'm also going through hell with my Chinese boss - he treats his other Chinese employees terribly (I should mention that I'm the only full-time foreign employee in his company) and he tried to do the same to me but I'm not the kind to just suck it up. If someone shouts at me I shout back!

Then he said I wasn't co-operating with him (I should also mention that there is a co-operation clause in my contract). I told him that if he wasn't happy with my performance then he should fire me.

***The trick to dealing with a "wonderful" boss is understanding your position as an employee.***

I know that I make my company look good, I also know that my company/boss is making a lot of money off of me - but most important, if my boss fires me then I'm not breaking the contract and therefore not responsible to pay the company for any losses such as visa, insurance,...

In then end, I figured out that I was the boss and not him.
