I have recently started a GI diet and have stuck to the plan 100%. I was so pleased with myself for the efforts and felt that I was sure to have lost weight. When I weighed myself after the first week, I had put on a pound. I was devastated as I had been perfect on the plan. So I re read the book/ plan and continued for the second week. Now 2/3 of the way through the second week I have put on another 1.5 pounds. I know this is really only 2.5 pounds but I can't get my head around what is going on!! Especially as in the book, it says that for the first few weeks youo should loose more weight. Does anyone have any suggestions before I loose faith altogether?

Lilipop, I've never tried the GI diet but the only thing I can think of, if you've stuck to 100% and have not lost weight, is that maybe your portion sizes are too big. Even if something is good for you, if you have too much of it, it's counterproductive. Remember, everything is good for you, but in moderation. Why don't you try Weight Watchers which is the diet that most doctors recommend?

I will have another look at my portions. I walk a lot - which is my exercise. Could maybe do more. Thanks

From what I have seen on my sister in law, weight watchers is the way to go. She was 120kg, after 2 years of really watching what she eats and exercise she lost 55kg with weight watchers and looks absolutely amazing. It did take a lot of discipline though.

My husband and I are following the GI Diet as well... we're very pleased with the result. Besides the GI diet we also do a lot of exercise such as hiking, gym, jogging and body pump.

Congratualtions on your weight loss lillipop, but if I can just put my 2 cents in to help you get thru the times that you feel as though you havent lost anything..even though you have stuck to your plan 100%. (I use to be a weight loss consultant)
Women (unfortunately for us) find it more difficult to lose weight than a man. we tend to retain fluid when starting up a new diet plan. Your body notices that 'something is different' when embarking on a diet and thats when, although you DID loose weight in a particular week, you may not think you didnt due to fluid retention.
A few factors to take into consideration:
1- what time of the month is it when you are weighing yourself? (just before a period is when you can be 'bloated' the most and can even appear to have 'put on' weight).
2- Are you weighing yourself on the day, same time each week? (its no good jumping on the scales first thing in the morning before breakfast to then check it the following week after dinner...what you have just put in your belly will weigh in also.
3- Now this is the most important..cant stress it enough!! Your weight loss should be based on your measurements more so than what you weigh. As indicated in the points above, it can be difficult to determine your 'true' body weight..not to mention can get you down unnecessary. Take your measurments every couple of weeks to see the real results. Measurments should be from around your bust, waist, hips and thigh.
How your clothes feel is also a great indicator, if they are getting loose..then your on the right track!
If your going to lose weight the right way (healthy way) then its not a 'quick fix'. Around 1/2 to 1kg per week is safe and will allow your body to adjust to its new lifestyle, rather than feeling like its being starved and needing to 'store' anything new you place in your mouth.
Exercise is also a big role. But in moderation! No need to pelt it out at the gym 7 days a week. Start off with half an hour if thats all you can fit in around 3 times a week. Just get your heart rate elevated slightly and maintain that. Lifting weights is also fantastic as the more muscle you build the more calories you will burn naturally without even lifting a finger!
Last but not least...Water, water, water! Try and get in at least 1L per day. If you dont like drinking plain water all the time than substitute some of it it with herbal tea...especially with the weather being so chilly!
Goodluck in your quest and stay positive! Plateauing unfortunately happens, but know its a very normal thing that the body does when loosing weight and you just have to keep on track...dont give up! Eventually you will start loosing again if you dont faulter from thinking 'its not working'...Our bodies are amazing and will adapt with hard work and persistence!
Cheers ;)
