Does anyone know if you are allowed to keep pet snakes in New Zealand? I know they don't have snakes in NZ, but are you allowed them as pets maybe with a licence?

If there are no snakes in NZ, there is no way they will allow ANYONE to introduce the first one. That is an ecological disaster waiting to happen - a gravid snake gets smuggled into the country, escapes, and the downward spiral begins!

NZ Biosecurity take the bringing in of organic material/food/animals very seriously as they are rightly trying to protect their unique ecosystems there. Every year, the Unwise try to take in banned items and are fined very heavily for it. For example, just trying to take an apple into the country as you get off the airplane,will set you back $NZ 200.
NZ is a beautiful country, with a friendly people who are passionate about keeping it that way. I'm sure you'll have an excellent time if you visit/live there, just make sure it's without the snake!

they even wash your golf shoes at the customs to make sure that you wont bring ANYTHING in - so no way that would let you bring a snake in! And too right, too!! What are you thinking, mate!

Whats wrong with snakes, we have 2 pet snakes here in HK. They are very interesting, under rated animals, and make good pets that are pretty easy for the kids to look after.

I was checking because my friend is moving there and wants to take his snake. Obviously you can't keep snakes there! I've heard New Zealand is a beautiful place and hopefully I'll be able to visit my friend there one day. Gee, fancy cleaning golf shoes!

Rabbits make nice pets too, but as I recall rabbits became the bane of Australia. Introduction of carnivorous snakes into the wild in NZ (and it WOULD HAPPEN), where there are none, would be an ecological disaster!
