Hi, has anyone tried giving your one year old any of the above for spread or drink or simply mix in to congee? My grandma said she fed on that when she was small n fed on my dad too. My mom said she fed us when we started solid and now me... umm, not sure of this salty stuff for one year old although i love it till the end, especially Bovril. I always see a bottle of bovril or marmite on the shelve at home since l was little and till now if i go back visiting.

What about you? if yes, what and how do you prepare it for your LO?

we use marmite...on toast, my son hates it, hates it in congee too.

the only time it works is when i use it as a seasoning in some of annabel karmel's recipes..

My daughter started eating vegemite sandwiches or vegemite on toast from around 10-11 months. Just make sure you only put a little bit on the bread to start with as it's quite a strong taste.

can anyone please tell me why give it at all? Not being sarcastic - just really curious. My husband is a Kiwi and grew up on this stuff so keeps on trying it on our daughters, they hate it. the stuff is revolting, so why insist? Does it have some massive nutritional values or something? Many thanks for explaining!!

I am also a kiwi who grew up on Marmite (and I love it!) - maybe it's just a cultural thing!! Can I also point out that Bovril/Vegemite/Marmite are all completely different despite the fact that they all appear to be foul smelling black goo to many people. NZ marmite is different to english marmite and vegemite (which aussies love) - I can't stomach either of those, I think they are revolting. I think all are an excellent source of vitamins and minerals (i.e. Vitamin B, Iron, folate, etc) and I suppose from a health perpective a much better alternative than sugary spreads. I plan to introduce my baby to the delights of marmite very soon!

my husband will tell you that marmite kept him alive during those poor uni days....hahahahah

i grew up on bovril...my grandma would mix it in congee and feed me as a child.

i am not a huge fan or all 3, i don't mind them but they wouldn't feature in my last meal on this earth!

i have begun adding marmite to babies, congee, oat porridge, toast etc, and he totally loves it. apparently it's totally full of vitamin b.

kali - how old is your baby? My mother used to do the same thing and she suggested I do it too...my bub is 8 months...not sure if he is old enough yet.

It's also good mashed with eggs - I LOVED that as a kid.

katiefran: mine is 13 months. I just started to give him some last week. will try it on him with mashed eggs and see what he has to say about it - thanks!

I just think it's great, 'cos you can use it like you would chicken/beef broth without actually having to boil meat. so i't really cool as a noodle base too, as i hate the idea of feeding baby with soup made from stock cubes.

I definitely didnt like it as a kid, but now i'm a total fan of the stuff.

It is a bit on the salty side so you might want to wait a bit?
