What do you think about Lan Kwai Fong? Do you love it for it's lively, fun atmosphere, great food and mix of like-minded people? Or do you avoid it and prefer Wan Chai/Lamma/Soho/Sai Kung/somewhere else?
I'm an art student at the Hong Kong Art School and have an assignment to "create a portrait of Lan Kwai Fong" - so I'd love to hear your views.
I may use your actual words in my art work, or I may simply use them as part of my research/inspiration. At any rate, please tell me why you love or hate the place (or are simply indifferent to it) - personal experiences/memories are useful, as are more general thoughts about how LKF functions within Hong Kong as a whole.
One point: if LKF isn't your favourite place, please keep to the forum rules in your reply (e.g. no slagging off individual bars etc by name).
Thanks!

Married Couple early forties and we both hate the place, too loud, busy and over priced. Not good with crowded bars full of drunken people, our idea of Hell.

When I first visited HK as a tourist while I was working in Korea I loved the atmosphere of LKF (I was there for New Year's 2004). As a person living in HK now I don't like it much at all- not much reason for someone in a stable relationship to go there, plus I know some of my students go there, giving me even less incentive to go. Maybe good for once a year or so, to remind me why I prefer the peace and quiet in Tai Po.

Overpriced bars/restaurants. Hell hole !

in LKF u can get girls without paying (ok 1,2 drinks maybe), in wanchai u need to pay.
on the rare occasion you can find 'like-minded people' there yes, but definitely not during any public holidays like CNY when all the like-minded people are most likely out of town..

LKF is a great place for singles and early company get together really, drinks are way over priced, thats why street drinking is popular from '7-11' bars! which is busy with all the expat/international school underage drinkers!

I guess first impressions last.....Last summer, about 11pm on a Friday night we took a detour after dinner to walk through LKF (we were new to HK then). After stepping over 3 puddles of vomit in about 15 metres, we had seen enough. An ugly place, a lot of fake, boring, seedy people. Crap music. The type of place you can find in any city with a CBD - certainly nothing special or unique.

it's specially great during big festivals or holidays, but other than that ... it's simply overrated.

fun for taking friends who are visiting out and I still like Rat Alley. Le Jardin is a great bar too.. But yeah I probably prefer Soho for a less boozy night out!
