Which follow-on formula?

My LO is 13 months old and up until now we have been going the BFing route. LO has not had much dairy, but whenever we give yogurt (homemade organic unsweetened) the poos have been a bit "much".

LO never took to any formula, and barely tasted any before protesting and vomiting.

Any suggestions for what to give now - Prosobee, Organic Milk, Goat's Milk, etc.?

LO does eat 3 small meals a day, but is super super picky about eating and really doesnt like it. Still BF about 6 times a day plus overnight feedings.

Thanks.

How about just milk? Eventually he/she have to go there. The intestine will adapt.

Also. 6+1(2?) times a day? You need to be a bit tougher on the kid about eating up. With our #2 she was really lazy and would only snack. So my wife expressed and gave it to her the bottle instead. That ensured a full meal.

It does sound rough to say you need to be tougher with the meals. But I have a very picky now 3 year old and he only started eating more food(still limited variety) when I stopped giving too much milk in a glass. Try gradually adding regular cows milk into cereal etc with a small glass at a meal. I did have to make him hungry to actually eat for a long time by being very strict about snacks and meals. He could live forever off on small biscuit! I also had to give veggies or whatever he doesn't like at the beginning while he watches me get the rest ready. They will eat eventually and it is better to try this now than when they are bigger and can talk back. Good luck. I wouldn't worry too much about the poo unless they seem distressed or crampy and it doens't settle down after a few weeks.

Kim11's suggestions are excellent. Kids always test your limits and you need to be firm up to a point. This point is probably further on than you think. ;) Our #1 sometimes doesn't want to eat her breakfast porridge, instead skipping straight to her small glass of grapefruit juice. But we do insist she wait for us to finish. Normally this tactic makes her bored/hungry so she will have a couple of spoons. Sometimes she also gets raisins in the porridge as an incentive. We bury them deep. :)

Needless to say, ensuring good eating habits early is very important. What they learn as kids stays with them for life.

Regular dairy product such as cow's milk and yogurt on top of the regular foods are excellent source of calcium for children over 1 year old. It's is not a must to take any formula at that age. More of important is to introduce solid foods so as to strengthen the jaw development as well as for adequate nutrient intake.

if she's over 1 and not allergic to cow's milk, make your life easy and give COLD cow's milk from the fridge....don't bother with formula.

i say cut down the milk intake and increase solids.....i'm no bf expert but after 1, you definitely don't need to feed a toddler milk 6 times a day and more at night! most should be doing 1 in the morning, 1 after lunchtime time and one at bedtime.

Agreed with Wheelymate. 6 times a day is a lot.

Thanks for the suggestions - we will move things around a bit and try to cut down on the feeds. I dont want to "overstuff" LO with 3 big milk feeds a day too quickly though, so will do this slowly.

LO gets 3 meals a day - fruit and cereal in the morning, chicken and vegetable congee for lunch and dinner. Eats between 2 - 4 ounces at each meal. No "snacks" except for the milk feeds.

i suggest offering him a variety of food to get him interested in solids. they get bored easily with repetitions (well at least for mine, he does), also try replacing the milk with bread or cheese during snack...my prince loves cheese with zuchinni, or applesaue with scones for tea.

Thanks Germaine - will try to introduce some bread and cheese. Any suggestions for how to get baby to accept a thicker item such as bread if they usually gag at anything thicker than congee?

Thanks again. :)

Try very small pieces and practice practice practice. It can be quite frustrating.

First of all, congrats on breast feeding for one year!!

I breast fed my first for 13 months, and plan to do the same with my second (now 10 months). We never gave bottles, it was 'direct'.

When our baby turned one, we tested him with milk and he wasn't allergic.

We mixed milk with some food at first to be sure he was okay with it.

I was down to 3 BF a day, then reduced to 2 once he was taking milk, then one then none.

We then offered a cup of milk with a straw (those Nuby cups that don't spill/leak are fabulous).

We left it out wherever he was - table, playroom, living room, etc...

After about 5 days of being quite thirsty, he walked over and picked up the cup and drank from the straw.

He just turned two recently, and goes through 3-4 cups a day of milk.

He was never a 'long' breast feeder, and he never had bottles, so he took to milk the way adults drink - as an when he is thirsty, not a whole bottle 3 x day.

Our baby is 10 months now, she drinks water from a straw (Nuby cup again), and we will introduce milk to her the same way.

In terms of meals, by this age you should be on 3 meals and two snacks a day according to most sources.

Oh, and so called toddler formula or follow on formula is a marketing scam! whole fat Milk milk milk, unless allergic, then goats milk usually works.

and one more, my baby #1 didn't like textures either until about 13 months.... then he just started going for it!.... baby #2 loves textures at 10 months....

good luck
