As someone who can sing (not just cos I think so, have won competitions and performed on stage) I'd say you can teach someone to sing "in tune" to some extent, but they will never reach the level of skill as someone with natural talent. Not sure how you would go about testing to see if you're tone deaf though.

My wife and I are both tone deaf. We try not to sing to our daughters. ;) We do have an iPod + speakers so they do get exposed to good quality voices.

I think you have to be naturally talented to sing well. I have a friend who can't sing a note in tune by herself but if she's singing along with other people she's ok, but has no idea if she's in tune or not. I think you can either sing or you can't.

To some extent, singing is like any other physical skill. If you never do it, you probably won't be very good at it, and some people have more natural talent than others. And like other physical skills, you do improve with practice but most people won't ever be amazingly good.

There are actually very few people who are truly 'tone deaf', as this means not just that you can't sing in tune but that you can't really even recognise what's in tune or not.
