Can anyone give me advice on buying and owning a car in hong kong. Who could check out the car before buying it. Also, how much for taxes etc.?
Thanks!
Ashlee

depends on buying new or used. Used, you could find some on this site in the classifieds. You could have the Hong Kong Automobile Association check the road worthiness of the car... no taxes on a used car; new will have the '1st tax' built into price. License each year runs from about 5k upwards of 10k depending on engine size.

Hi Cyberashlee,
if you buy privately, take it a mechanic for a checkup before you buy (prob cost you $300-600), try and take it to a mechanic that someone you know uses, if you're in sai kung theres some great local mechanics. if you do find a decent one, the mechanic can arrange the car licence (which is the rego) and do everything if you don't want to spend the time going in to the queues in the transport/licencing dept, but it isn't a huge hassle and the info is on the govt website. if you don't buy privately, get a decent guarantee from the seller, 6 months or so as you pay a premium for buying from them. as hmm said, tax is paid on new cars and there is not much of a second hand market here, which is why you can get some bargains on second-hand cars.
cheers
