Are biscuits bad for toddler?

My husband thinks I am giving my 2yr old too many biscuits.I buy the sugar free ones but its difficult trying to find snacks that he will eat? Any idea's from anybody?

Ours loves rice cakes, ryvita crackers and other whole grain craskers without salt and without sugar.


He also loves snacking on dry cereal (whole grain, no salt, no sugar).


We also make multi grain pancakes (no salt, no sugar) for snacks. You can buy the mix at Health-Gate.


Another good one is quesadilla - take a whole wheat tortilla, put some grated cheese on half of it, fold it over, pop it in the microwave for 30-45 secs until the cheese is melted, then slice it up in to strips or triangles.


banana dipped in yogurt (he'll like the dipping process)

put a small amount of cinammon in a bag (really small), put some sliced apples in and shake shake shake (he can help you shake, he'll like that)


Those are just some of the snacks we do.

My son also can eat a lot of biscuits if I let him. That is all he would eat if I didn't stop it. It is hard to find easy things to carry around with you for snacks but I try to limit the amount of biscuits I give him. The snacks I give him(he is three now but have done this for a while) are pieces of cheese, apple slices, carrot sticks(depends on his chewing), little pancakes, mixed roasted sunflower and pumpkin seeds, toast.


I will give him a few biscuits when we are out and waiting for a bus etc but when possible I give him apples or something else as a snack to try and encourage him to eat other things!

I also give him corn or rice crackers which he loves and probably have less sugar and bad stuff than actual biscuits.

It all depends on the sugar content. Some biscuits/cookies are all sugar, some are barely sweeter than crackers. In a wider context, making your child used to snacking on things that are basically unhealthy outside mealtimes introduces bad habits. My wife loves Swedish ginger snaps and I have noticed that this is carrying over to our older daughter. She can ask for a ginger snap at any time during the day. Bad habits already at two.


I would say:

- Severely limit sugary snacks since they displace better foods.

- Ensure that food is taken at mealtimes. Biscuits/cookies should be dessert or a designated snack, not something to be taken at any time during the day.

- Just because it says "organic and healthy snack" on the package doesn't mean it's true. Organic sugar is still sugar.



As an aside: As you know, "biscuits" means different things in American English and British English. In AE it means a relatively low sugar snack. In BA it means what is in AE called a "cookie". Severely limit the latter, but don't mess around with the former either.



crj and kim11 have excellent tips. Dry cereal is great. Our daughter loves Special K, which is low sugar and low calorie.

If you make your own, you can put healthy things like wheat germ and less sweet stuff.

It's really not hard and there are so many recipes online!

Good lord, well done ladies! I try to give mine the japanese ones that you find in City Supper (pumpkin, carrot etc) but I also give them (sometimes) the Digestives, which I am sure have tons of sugar... I think -everything in moderation should be fine... The other day I made brownies and gave a little to the babies (well - they are nearly 20 mnths) - they did not like it!!! Go figure

So true. Absolutism is a bad thing for everything from TV to food. This guy I talked to once told a story of how his kids sometimes got sweets, while his nephews never ever did, at home. So they'd go to a family dinner and there'd be a bowl of crisps. His kids would have "some crisps". His nephews would clean out the bowl and practically lick the inside. Draw your own conclusions.

Ruth is right. I tried a recipe last week for wholewheat banana pancakes which contains wheatgerm. The raw mixture tasted FOUL and I was sceptical that the kids would eat them, but the cooked result was great and my VERY fussy kids love them! I froze the extras and they are easy to pop in the toaster.


I try not to give too many dried snacks because, apart from the salt and sugar issue, I think it can cause constipation, plus dehydration in summer if your kids don't drink a lot.

Here's the cookie/biscuit recipe I just made for my family

It's from Whole Foods for the Whole Family which is a La Leche League cookbook.



Oatmeal Cookies

1/2 cup margarine/butter/oil

1 cup brown sugar

1 egg

1/4 cup water/juice/soya milk

1 tsp vanilla

1 cup whole wheat flour

1/2 cup dry milk powder/soya milk powder

1/4 tsp salt

1/2 tsp baking soda

1 tsp cinnamon

2 cups rolled oats

1 cup wheat germ

Optional...1/2 cup chopped dates/raisins/nuts/coconut/dried fruit/carob or chocolate chips


Turn the oven on to 350F. Grease two baking sheets.

Cream the margarine, add brown sugar, egg and water til smooth. In a second bowl, mix flour, dry milk powder, salt, baking soda, cinnamon, oats, wheat germ and optional ingredients. Put the two together, and drop by teaspoonfuls onto baking sheets. Bake about 12 minutes or until light brown.

Here's a whole wheat banana with wheat germ pancake recipe.

2 cups milk/soy milk

3 eggs

2 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp salt

1 1/4 cup whole wheat flour

3/4 cup wheat germ

1 1/2 tbsp brown sugar

1 tsp vanilla

1/4 tsp lemon juice

3/4 cup chopped bananas

3/4 cup chopped pecans or other nuts.


Beat milk, eggs, baking powder and salt in bowl.

Add remaining ingredients, mix well or use a blender.

Cook as usual!


Yummy and very nutritious!

My child is 2y and like most of children is keen on cakes.

For snack I give him for example:

* a piece of bread with nothing on it + half of an apple (no sugar, no grease in bread but a lot of cereals)

* a yogourt to drink, it's in a small bottle

* some stewed fruit made by milfself or bought in individual bag in bumbs to babe (ap lei chau)

* some crackers


And sometimes some sweets.
