you could look at the Norwegian International school, in Tai Po. . Or even ESF, most ESF schools have learning support staff for children with special needs

A class of 18 is actually considered quite small in HK and I don't think you're going to find another school that will top that.

As cd mentioned, ESF has a good program for children who need that extra support, but their classes are will be larger than what she is used to and the schools are quite difficult to get into.

I haven't heard much about the Harbour school but maybe their class sizes are very small due to the fact that the school is very new?

I would suggest calling up a few of the smaller international schools whose classes are relatively small and ask whether they have support programs that cater for youyr friends daughter. You will find that most of the smaller international schools are located in The NT.

Just a few:

Norwegian Inetrnational in Tai Po

Hong Lok Yuen International in Tai Po

Japanese International in Sheung Shui

I'm sure there are others that others will be able to recommend to you.

The school's mentioned are good ones, but are not likely equipped to provide the low-ratio, explicit help you are looking for... 18 is certainly a small number in HK or anywhere else other than at fee paying schools which deal specifically with learning needs. Perhaps targetted, one-to-one help in the form of a learning assistant in the current school environment would be an alternative? Additionally, they may come up with an arrangement where the curriculum and expectations are modified at her current school, and remediation could be provided after school through one-to-one help with a Specialist trained in approaches best proven for students with Dyslexia. Perhaps they could contact the Dyslexia Association of HK for advice and options.

ESF have special programs, I heard from a friend who teaches there, maybe you could try and ask there as well.

Pine - you are sadly mis-informed.

ESF has well-established and highly regarded Learning Support in many of its primary schools including Bradbury and Beaconhill and has recently expanded this to Peak, Quarry Bay and Kowloon Junior.

Learning support is also provided at ESF secondary schools.

The main difference between ESF and HKIS is whether you want a 'UK' or 'US' (religious) style education for your kids and what will be best for their future.

Anyone looking to put their kid(s) into school here should visit them before making a decision if at all possible.

I think advice for your friend would be to continue to discuss with the class teacher and any Special Needs staff what is being done to not only modify curriculum/expectations, but to remediate difficulties as well. Help with getting through the curriculum is a valuable thing certainly but the difficulties themselves should be addressed with specifically targetted programmes...
