Hope a ex-Sydneysider can help me.

A friend is moving abroad for the first time and moving to Sydney - she is looking to rent/buy (not sure) and is thinking areas such as Chatswood, Willoughby, Cremoine, Mosman and Neutral Bay would suit. She has 2 kids - 9 and nearly 11 to put in school.

I'd appreciate some first hand knowledge to forward to her if anyone knows about these areas.

Many thanks.

I'm an ex-Sydneysider... anything in and around North Sydney - Willoughby, Cremorne, Mosman and Neutral Bay will be expensive and not very big. The further out you go the more you'll get for your money - as with anything. Chatswood and beyond.

I cannot tell you anything about the schools but the public transport can be a bit hectic. Chatswood is on the train line so it would be much easier to work with, compared to the buses. From Willoughby, Cremorne, Mosman and Neutral Bay you would be catching the bus into the city or to North Sydney, then hopping on a bus to the city.

I guess it depends on whether she is working in the city or in/around North Sydney.

I lived over near Neutral Bay/Mosman many, many, many years ago and enjoyed the area.

I've been told the rental market is crazy at the moment in Sydney. People are out bidding others to get an apartment, meaning someone comes in and offers more money than the person before. It is an investor's dream.

Also, the market for buying has gone through the roof as well. If she's looking at buying then maybe she'll be able to afford it. I think the prices would be closer to $1million AUD than $500,000 AUD however I'm only going based on what friends have spent and they do not live in the inner city, they life at least 45mins driving from the city, some an hour or more away.

I live in North Ryde, which is not far from the area you mentioned. For instance from my place to Chatswood (driving) takes about 10mins, public transport is obviously longer.

I guess it all depends on where she prefer to live hence would be easier for me to try and assist in fing a school around that suburb plus I got frieds working for housing agents which might be able to assist in rental.

More information would be great.
