Our baby girl (1 month) is alert and bright eyed and seems okay in every way. She's breastfed every 2 hrs and has regular bm's. But prior to her bm's, a lot of straining and grunting, almost turning purple in the face. She always gives a good burp after feeding, and is not crying tho she seems in pain....we have her check up next week but just wondering if anyone has experienced this before?

Sounds quite normal. Both our daughters did that.

okay, thanks for the reassurance...it's so hard to watch her struggle like that, but sounds pretty common.

Baby massage and leg movements can help. Just rub her tummy and after, do bicycle movements with her legs It's rather normal though.

Have a look at kellymom, La Leche League and askdrsears websites too.

Mum might wish to attend LLL meetings in HK and meet some other mothers. They also have a full lending library of books that help.

Newborns strain and fuss when passing very soft or liquid stool. This behavior is normal. Some sources believe this is because the soft loose stool of a breastfed baby does not exert adequate pressure on the rectum. Other theories believe the muscles of the anus are not strong or coordinated enough to pass stool easily. However, there is no reason for concern and the behavior will resolve itself with time and maturity.
