we are planning a week (maybe 10 days) in Japan with out 2 year old twins - grateful for suggestions where to go.
We would probably do 2-3 nights in Tokyo but after that where? Kyoto? Somewhere with springs? we like a mix of culture and nature really so any suggestions are welcome.

We are actually going to Japan for the first time in April. We are doing a bit of Kyoto, some hot springs, then a solid 4 nights of Tokyo.
I would recommend buying a good tourist guide like "Lonely Planet" for some good old fashioned research.

axptguy - who did you book with or did you do your own research? think I want Kyoto and springs... maybe Tokyo. The locals (in HK i mean) all are very keen on Furano - flower and lavender farms, but my thinking is - I saw the "real" thing in Provence, France, so not so keen to go and see it in Japan..

Furano if you want snow and ski.
Start either Tokyo or Osaka, must visit Kyoto and a side trip of "real" hot-spring in Hakone or Izu.
Hotels have baby-sitting facilities to make your holiday fun and hassle-free, expensive though.
They even have volunteers for walking tour in Tokyo, avail of Tokyo Notice Board and Weekender, otherwise access The Japan Times and Daily Yomiuri.
Try the Japanese-run travel agent, widely advertise in SCMP.
We went during the Chinese New Year and acted like tourist, 'twas fun.

Did our own. I'd recommend reading some guides. For example the book "Dining Guide to Japan" by Boye Lafayette de Mente is great.
Flight - American Airlines miles. Booked through American Airlines.
Train - Going to book there. If the JR Rail Card is an option you need to book it before you go to Japan.
Hotels - Marriott points. Booked hotel in Tokyo through Marriott. Ryokan - Had Japanese friend call them and book.
