acrid smell - what is it?

I have noticed some sort of acrid, sewage gas smell coming from our newly installed toilet. It's horrible. Our contractor had come in to check once. He advised us to pour water down the drain. I'd done it but the bad smell is still there. Does anyone know what possible causes there may be?

Sewage smell might mean the water isn't filling the kink (don't know the English term) all the way up. Does the water level in your toilet (the bowl, not the tank) seem normal?

Kink - siphon in English?? The U-tube/ inverted U-tube of the toilet bowl? The water level looks a little lower than normal, but the entire down leg of the passage seems to be completed filled. You have made a good point. Assuming that it's a water level problem, has it then got to do with improper mounting? Any insight? I'm getting the contractor in again on Friday. I am not sure if I can explain it to him in a way that he understands.

We had that problem with a couple of places we have lived in. We ended up putting clear sticky tape over the drain next to the toilet in every bathroom and have never had a problem since! We have been living in our existing place for 5 years now. No more smells.

Thanks! I keep thinking I'm fluent until I get hit with something like that. :)

I'm not a plumber but I would assume so.

Same problem with those drains then. No water filled siphon keeping the smell out. Sloppy of the builders.

Thanks for your opinion. Will try to get the contractor to fix it. The problem with him or rather, me, is that I've paid him every cent already. Anyway, will see what he is going to say.
