Any obligation to support an unmarried child?

Does anyone know the legal implications regarding a child support? The relationship broke up 2 year ago; we were not married but lived and have a child together. The father of the child does not provide financial support ever since my son was born. I am thinking to seek a financial support from him. But not sure how complicated will it be and will it be a costly procedure, and what likely does a lawyer charge on this kind of case?

Thanks Moobsy. Yes, I really don't want to spend much on this as I need to fully support my son and he has started his school life now. That's the reason I am here and try to get as much as advices as possible. So that I can have some idea on how to deal with it first.
