this family is in need of a BREAK! but we also have a 8 week old baby who is not quite sleeping through yet....should we wait until we crack that or should we just go and make the best out of it, sleepless nights or not?

Do it now...
If you wait until AFTER baby sleeps through, you will just be stressing about if it will effect the new ability to sleep through! In addition, right now, there is no nap schedule really, so the baby is super flexible and will nap in the car seat, in the pram, on the plane, etc...
Of course, you will probably want to keep your toddler's mid-day nap if you can, but we are very flexible while on holiday and often he sleeps in the pram while we go on a long pre or post lunch walk... Or we all went back and had a nap!
ENJOY, RELAX and take lots of photos :)

Agreed heartily with crj. You'll never be "ready" and there's always going to be some "issue" with the kids. Just go.

So am I.... in need of a holiday. Bubs is 12 weeks old now. Where can you go with a 12 weeks old baby and still get a holiday? Do you bring your helper along? You'd have to pack hell of a lot wouldn't you? Breastpump, steriliser, bottle warmer, baby cot, cot mobile, nursery rhyne cds, cd player... and so on. *headache*. And I doubt bubs will like spending time lazing by the beach.

Your baby does not need all of those things!
The hotel will provide a baby cot.
Ask hotel for a microwave or access to one, and you can bring microwave steraliser bags. If not, you can bring milton steraliser tablets and steralise in a bucket.
Bring the pump to keep your supply up (pump and dump) - but breast feed rather than give a bottle - saves a whole huge hassle. And if you are just pumping and dumping, you needn't steralise anything!
Baby can live without cot mobile, CDs and other 'toys' they will have an overwhelming amount of things to see and do in a new hotel room and location.
We had great trips to Bali, Thailand, Taiwan, China.... Bali was probably the best though - nice villa with a small pool and access to the kitchen. There was also a 'bale' on the beach - which offered shade and a great place to rest - we would spend mornings there in the shade and he LOVED it, he took his morning nap there too (While at home he would have been in bed, babies are flexible!!), we would swim in the shade in the pool too.
You just need to relax and accept it won't be exactly the same as at home. (trust me, I was totally nervous before my first trip, but they all work out to be lots of fun and you do get to relax and sleep a lot)

A weekend at a local hotel can be very refreshing and also eliminates the hassles of flights and international travel.
We've had lovely mini-holidays at the Gold Coast, Mui Wo, and Tin Shui Wai.

- You don't need a sterilizer anyway. We've never had one. Detergent and water work just fine.
- Hotels provide cots.
- Pump is a good idea.
- You don't need that many toys. At 12 weeks a beer coaster can provide plenty of entertainment. If you're by the beach nothing puts baby to sleep like the sound of waves.
- Helper? Sure, you can bring her. Up to you.
After a few vacations with baby we've concluded that if you go to the beach they take up about an extra bag + the stroller. That's including a few days' supply of diapers!

Hotel provide cots or get your own lightweight one - we have a Phil&teds
Sterilising - get a travel one or lindam sterilising bags or sterilising tablets. bring your own small bottle of detergent and brushes.
Cot mobiles and CDs - totally unnecessary if you ask me and you'll be glad you left them behind when you see how much baggage you have with just packing the essentials.
Nappies, oh gosh don't leave home without them.....
if you are breastfeeding, you can do away with sterilising if you feed directly, right so even less things to pack.
the stimulation and amusement your baby will get is from the stuff he will see from the new environment...just watching the trees blow in the wind will keep them amused for some time.
if you are ready to bring baby into the water...ensure that you have all the swim stuff packed.
don't forget his blanket/swaddle/grobag...whatever that helps him settle during bedtime at home.

hmmm don't want to throw a spanner in the works here but we have travelled to phuket, america, malaysia and australia (plus 3 cities within) with bubs who is now only 9 months old and i can safely say i am quite traumatised and very reluctant to travel any more with bubs until he is 18 years old! (ha ha). with an older baby i think it disrupts their routine (sleeping) too much and takes a long time to get them back on track when you get home. but of course, since your baby is only 8 weeks they are much more flexible. however the whole "holiday" experience is SO different (as we found out in phuket at 12 weeks). can't mosey out of your villa whenever you fancy nor spend hours baking in the sun on the beach nor drinking till the wee hours... hee hee. ;)

that's the problem...we have travelled with my toddler before and there were some pretty bad days and nights for some of the trips....but i feel like we need one and hate the idea of being trapped at home. and it's alot cheaper to travel before they turn 2 as well...hahahahah

Thanks for all the tips. I must admit I'm really nervous about taking the baby out especially since things are beginning to work well at home. I really should just give it a go I suppose. Hubby has been suggesting a holiday for a while but I keep saying NO WAY. I just keep visualising being stuck in a hotel room at a beach resort with the baby.!

It can be a challenge but you should not feel like a prisoner.
- Have a plan.
- Ensure that your baby doesn't become too hungry or too sleepy. If this means cutting activities short, so be it.
- Try to relax. It's a beach resort. It's not like it's a problem if baby cries while on the beach.
- If you can afford it, hire a nanny some of the days or bring your helper.
- Your husband needs to understand that he can't just sit back and relax. Yday in Stanley I saw this couple with 2 kids and one on the way sitting at a restaurant. Wife was getting up, picking up toys, feeding, wiping, etc... Husband sat there with a beer staring at the scene. Made me feel like slapping the lazy bastard.
