Harassment?

Dear Ladies,

Maybe it's my blonde hair or blue eyes, or maybe it's just because I'm a foreign woman but I get harassed on the streets once a week on average-

I could understand it if I was livin' out in the sticks but I live in the Guo Mao downtown business center of Beijing! I'm a very well educated young woman and I don't appreciate some jackasses calling me lao wai xiao niu or screaming 'Hello' at me like I'm deaf.

Does anyone else recieve the same treatment?

Sorry for complaining but I just gotta vent to someone,

Sarah

Take it easy. You should be happy and take it as a compliment when someone took an eye on you. Life goes on.

It's just ignorance and possibly a wee bit of racism. You need an outlet - imagine them naked, listen to music, take up kickboxing in the evenings to vent. Really brace yourself for it. This is my 5th foreign country and I'm a super tall woman so I know how you feel. It starts to break you down sometimes but you just have to find a way to make it liveable. Sunglasses are awesome, especially when it's not bright ;) Keep your head up kiddo!

While it is nice to be appreciated, it is insulting to be catcalled. I find it to be degrading. When I was in Chicago I would get that reaction from the hispanicos while walking down the street. A few times I whirled around and said, "What the *&%$ do you want?" It really threw them for a loop and they were speechless. Can you speak enough cantonese to go back and forth like this on the street? Give it back right between the eyes, sister!
