my wife and I enjoy cycling in the place we live right now and we are moving up to HK in a few weeks time, and wondering whether we should ship our bikes. can we cycle in HK? I mean do they have a dedicated bicycle lane or a place not too far from the city where we wont get hit by cars or anything like that.

Not really on HK island. In the New Territories many of the towns have dedicated cycling paths which are good. But if you're on the island transporting your bikes will be a pain.

You should also know that you aren't permitted to take bikes on any trains, busses and most ferries (the main routes). My husband is a dedicated road cyclist (he has never driven a car in his life!) and even he is glad we didn't bother shipping bikes.

The traffic and pollution are also shocking - motorists certainly aren't used to considering cyclists on the road.

However, if you plan on having a car you can travel out to some great areas (from what I've been told) for some recreational cycling/mountain bike riding. Keep in mind that generally accommodation is cramped - you may have issues storing your bikes....

Quite. I would not feel safe on a bicycle on the roads on the Island.

We shipped our bikes from abroad but wished we didn't. We've been to 2 places to cycle and they both had bicycle rental facilities at the cycle path.

I'm trying to imagine a place where it's more unpleasant, dangerous and impractical to cycle than Hong Kong.
