Electronic pest control device?

I recently saw a handy device in a 7-11 or Watson's that claimed it could repel mosquitoes, c*ckroaches and mice by dint of ultrasound emissions.

Does this work better than the anti-mosquito coils or electrically burnt fragrant pads?

It sounds great - I have no end of mosquitoes and a smnall number of rodents to get rid of in summer...

In theory it can work. If you do try it, let us know.

The best anti-mosquito device we've ever had is a "Mosquito Magnet" when we lived in the US. It uses propane and a chemical tablet to give out mosquito friendly scent. Mosquitos fly into a trap and are dried out. Very effective at keeping our 1/4 acre of garden (yes, outdoors!) pretty mosquito free. Also seemed pretty effective against mites and such. Even the smallest model is a pretty large device though, and requries a full propane tank every 3-4 weeks. http://mosquitomagnet.com/.

For ants, the best thing I have found here (thanks to our helper) is the "Combat" brand ant bait you can buy in the grocery store (black box with a target design). You'll get more ants for a day or two, but then they disappear. Combat also makes an equivalent roach bait.

And this mosquito-luring scent is not harmful for humans?

Well, I wouldn't let my daughters lick the machine but no. In any case unless you have your nose right up to the machine you can't smell a thing. It's not concentrated at all. Much less "impact" than, say, candles, spirals and whatnot.

As I understand it, the device works by mimicking human breath. So mostly it just "exhales" carbon dioxide.

Here are the FAQs: http://mosquitomagnet.com/how_it_works/faqs/

Note also that it doesn't work from day one. It takes a good 2-3 weeks until the breeding population has been culled, and you have to leave it on 24/7 all summer. So one should turn it on as soon as mosquito season starts and leave it on. We had some very nice almost mosquito free summers with the thing, while before it was impossible to be outside after dark.

We haven't tried it yet but we've just bought a cordless portable mosquito repellent from ThermaCELL that's supposed to repel mosquitos for up to 15ft for 12 hours. We're planning to take it with us when we go for walks and hikes next week. Also I presume we can use it in the garden as well.

It comes with repellent mats and butane cartridge so I don't think it actually kills the insects, just repels.

On the website, it doesn't exactly say you can buy in HK but we bought ours from our local hardware store nr Yuen Long.

Has anyone used this before? I'll let you know if I'm bite free after using it.

I have read that research by Kansas State University has found that some electronic mosquito repellants are slightly less effective than doing nothing at all...

And I've seen rats sitting on top of those ultra-sonic things. Cockroaches do seem to die after eating poisoned bait, however is it just me or did the lure of bait bring more roaches into my place than had been there before?

Since moving to an apartment in a newer, cleaner block, with tidier neighbours, I haven't had to use pest control methods at all. I imagine once summer rolls around, though, I might bring out a mosquito spray.

Yes, that's how the roach (and ant) baits work. However the population will start to drop off after a couple of days.

Having read a few of the "scam" reviews, they all seem based on the product breaking, not bad functionality. It's not the same thing.
