All you car xpert out there.
We need new tyres for our car. Tyre shop recommends Bridgestone G80 used tyres 80%.
Happy with good condition used ones as we don't go on highways, and mostly local driving. Going to and from work.
Is this a good option?
Any suggestions on other brands, reliable tyre shops on HK side.
Thanks

I would always buy brand news tyres. The thing with second hand is you have no idea where they come from (usually places like Japan when wheels are changed), no idea where or how long they have been stored and in what conditions. Tyres deteriorate with age, they can look good from the outside by may already be chemically breaking down inside. Not worth the risk.

A lot of people here buy a new car and the first thing they do is change the wheels and tyres so second hand ones can be good value. However, one should be careful and check the tyres for any bulges in the structure, plugs or vulcanisation repairs and also check that the bead is rounded and has no kinks or dents. Bridgestone are excellent tyres and new ones should be about $500 per tyre. Any tyre over three years old is getting on and should be replaced before 4 years from the date of manufacture not the date of installation. To check the date of manufacture look at the side wall. You will see a small oval shaped stamp on teh tyre with four numbers in it this give the week of manufacture for example if the number is 4403 then the tyre was manufactured in the 44th week of 2003. I personally only use new tyres now but I have used second hand ones in teh past with no problems but then I know what I am looking at.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for all the advice.
The guy at the tyre shop told me that these tyres are retired from a company car which routinely change their tyres annually. If it is to be believed....
Thank you 190K for the very good advice. It is most useful.

Hi 190K
I must be looking in the wrong area. Went around 2 tyre shops in Tin Hau/North Point and were quoted $1,200 ea for Bridgestone G80 and similar price for Pirelli P7.
Currently using Pirelli P6000 225/55 R16. Where can I find a Bridgestone for $500?
Cheers

Sorry my mistake. Yokohama are about the $500/tyre range. Bridgestones should be about $700, P6000 about $900-1000. I get my tyres in Yuen Long a freind just got new Pirelli Scorpion for his truck at $1000 each. If you are only driving around town and no highway then yokos will be good enough. Someone also recommended falken they are very good and have good wet weather characteristics about $600
