Washing cloth diapers -- only cold water!?

I would like to go for cloth diapers with our baby, who will be born later this year. I've been reading up on the subject and there is one question that I need an answer for.

We live in Beijing and as is common in China, our washing machine only takes in cold water. All the care instructions for cloth diapers specify that they need to be washed in hot water. Is there any way around this? Buying a new washing machine would be a bit of an investment for us at this point...

I live in BJ too, our front loader washer heats the water, so I guess we are lucky, as there is only a cold input pipe.

We use cloth, and we have a 'soak' bucket, where the nappies soak overnight with some napisan, we can't get napisan here so we use something similar. There are also ways to soak with baking soda, vinegar, essential oils and I don't know what else - but I am too lazy to combine things :) You can google this to get more information. Also, do you know the BOCA group, send me a pm for more infor and I can send you the link.

Then we wash them at about 40 degrees, not super hot, seems to work fine for us.

The best thing, is they line dry really fast here since it is sooooo dry! (in HK they took ages and I often used the dryer)

Sounds like a typical European/Korean washer. In our experience, many American washers don't heat the water. European ones typically do.

Soak bucket is a good idea.´

I used cold water to wash our diapers here in Canada. My babies never had any diaper rashes.

I would rinse the poop off in the toilet and then put them in a large bucket with cold water and 1/3 cup borax(also known as washing soda) to soak. When I was ready to wash them, I'd tip it into the washer and then spin. Then wash with regular detergent. I'd do an extra rinse at the end with 1/3 cup of vinegar.

cheers from Ruth

Thank you all for your answers. Looks like I will be able to figure it out without a new washer!

And thanks crj, I'm already on the BOCA mailing list :)

I did cloth diapers with my kids and found that the washing method really depended on the consistency of what was in the diaper. If you have a neat and tidy poo that is formed, it's much different than a sticky messy poo. I know this sounds funny, but it was MUCH easier to use a soaker bucket with the second one b/c her stool was well-formed and that wasn't a lot left to wash off. Good luck!
