Advice, please: dependent visa and would like to work

Due to family commitments I’m going to be staying in Hong Kong longer than anticipated. This would be no hardship if it didn’t look like I’m no longer going to be able to keep my UK work going long distance.

So …. could anyone please advise me as to what qualifications I would need to get a teaching job here? I’ve heard about TEFL but is there anything specific to Hong Kong I should know? Or are there any other types of teaching I could train for? And can I train here?

Bit of background on me:

- I was born and brought up in London – if that’s relevant for language teaching.

- I am/was a scriptwriter for kids and grownups TV in the UK, in both drama and comedy, and for the BBC and for ITV.

- I don’t have a degree but I do have an MA. How did I manage that? Well, it’s in Screenwriting and Screen Research and I got onto the course as a mature student on the basis of my writing samples.

Thanks in advance ……

Hi,

Are you on a recently issued dependant visa? If so then as far as i am aware you can work in any field that you choose. No work visa required.

If you choose teaching, then a TEFL/TESOL cert along with MA will give you minimum requirements if you need visa. easy to obtain if you go through agency and work in kindergarten. If no visa needed then you will probably get a teaching job fairly easily without any further qualifications.

You can do online courses here, but actual college study will depend on your visa status.

With your experience you could probably look at editing/proof reading English Jobs

Hope this helps.

Thanks very much for taking the time, that's really useful.

Yes, I'm here on a dependent visa. And I hadn't considered the editing/proof reading option.

Cheers!
