Is this normal for a NET?

I've been teaching as a NET now for about 6 months. When I first got here I had to work the second Saturday after I arrived but was told that working on the weekend was rare.Well in 6 months I've had to go in about 4 times and was just told today I have to work another Saturday in a few weeks time. This is not my definition of rare and whilst I often get a day off lieu I don't' get the time with my family as the kids are at school and my partner is working. Is this normal?? BTW I'm at a high school.

I think you should do a search on this site of NET. Some people previously said NETS worked every Sat. so maybe your situation is considered rare. The SCMP wrote about issues NETS have awhile back.

It's actually very normal, a lot of schools will ask for one Saturday a month to help with extra curricular activities. Do remember that a standard working week in HK is still 5.5 / 6 days. So you are having it good! It takes a while to get used to but this is HK and different rules / culture apply.

After you've been here for a while, you may wonder if anything is normal for a NET!

I usually have 5 or 6 Saturdays per year at my secondary school. Mock oral exams for 2 and at least one public listening exam (CE or AS level). Other Saturdays/Sundays I bring my two kids to school with me. We try to enjoy the activities or we just play in the staff room - printing out pictures to colour or playing online games.

Net and normal do not exist in the same sentence.

PNets often work every second Saturday.

As a SNet, it should be less rare, but it happens.

I have had 4-5 Saturdays this year so far.

THanks for the replies everyone. Yeah I guess it' s just what happens hey! I worked in High Schools in Japan for 6 years and so working on a Saturday is not so new. What I object to, is being told that it's rare and then being constantly called in. When they told me it was rare I didn't object and was happy to oblige but had they been upfront and said it often happens I could have had a chance to negotiate something right from the beginning. I'm just ticked off that they say one thing and do another. But I'm slowly learning....
