My child, aged 12, seems bright but says she is bored. She is in a class with children who I consider quite advanced so I would like an idea of her abilities and potential compared to others who are her age. Her teachers say she's fine or doing well, and give very general comments, but I want a different more objective opinion. I would like to know what she is strong or weak in.Are IQ tests reliable? should i look into getting her one?

Has she done any tests yet in her class for which you could compare her scores to those of her classmates, similarly is her homework not graded, and shouldn't that be a signal of her strength or weakness relative to the rest of the class.

Honestly speaking IQ tests are not the most reliable method to gauge your child's level of intelligence for a number of reasons, but there are few practical alternatives which is the reason for their ubiquity. When I was about six years old I was tested by the Hong Kong polytechnic university, they had some kind of program back in 82, but that test was designed for 5 year olds and it was very broad based not just an IQ test, but a number of different types of tests were performed to gauge different aspects of a child's personality, and I don't think it is available anymore (it might be I'm not sure). You could check with the psychology department of the polytechnic to see if they have something similar running now which could be run on a 12 year old
