First of all.... don't worry.

For a baby, it is important to look at what they eat every meal, every day.

For a toddler, look at it over a week.

At this time, your son is asserting his independence... sometimes he wants you to feed him, other times he wants to feed himself, sometimes he wants to hold the spoon, other times he throws it on the floor and uses his fingers.

If he is liking finger food at the moment - go for that. You can do rice noodles cut up small on a plate, steamed broccoli, cheese on toast, hard boiled egg or scrambled egg, pieced of fruit, etc...

For our 13 month old (and previously for our now 2 year old) we did a few things:

we prepared the porridge or breakfast, but we had a spoon and so does baby

we also had some mango / papaya cut up for finger food

this gave a variety of options

for the morning snack, it is a banana - either we hold it and she bites it, or she holds it, or we cut it up into small pieces nad she picks it up...

try offering food in a variety of ways so he has some choices. but don't overwhelm him with too many choices - 2 or 3 is enough.

Also, just keep offering healthy foods, he'll eat eventually... don't worry.

Be sure he has access to milk in a cup with a straw or sippy cup all day long, so when he is thirsty he can drink.

Poor baby, he is just figuring out how he wants to eat!

Typically kids will look for the nutrients they need. So I wouldn't worry unduly.

something fun... today we went on a picnic in the park.

I brought:

cheese (cut into cubes), broccoli (steamed), healthy crackers, sliced apples, milk, water.

Becasue it was a 'new' setting, my 1 year old was in heaven! She was eating this and that, eating off the blanket as she dropped things, having a blast - there was food, in front, behind, to her left, her right... and under her bottom by the end of it! But she was obviously having fun and enjoying the new experience.

So, I was thinking, you could try something fun on a Sunday to let him experience food in a new environment.

The other interesting thing was, we got to the park, and I put down a blanket, and the food was on the blanket too - she never left the blanket! Usually she would crawl all over, but she seemed to like the whole idea of blanket, food, etc...

Fair enough cara. ;) What I meant was that if you put (healthy) options in front of them, kids will tend to home in on what nutrients they are missing, if any.

Also agree with crj. It's amazing how new and interesting old things can be. For example there was a time when our #1 hated getting her teeth brushed. But if we had guests she had no problem with a guest brushing her teeth. This despite the fact that she spent most of the evening hiding from the guests. In other words, break the pattern.

No biggie cara. We have all been (very) tired. On helper free day our daughter often just gets spring rolls for dinner. Very easy to make. Of course we're spoiled since they were made by our helper. She makes big batches and puts in the freezer ready to fry.
