Hi there
I have been living in an apartment for the past 6 months and every week I need to call the agent to fix things. Something either breakdowns, a pipe gets blocked, or the electricity goes off - the list goes on and on. Plus these things are not minor...they need experts to come and fix things.
How much is too much? I don't complain about small things as if I can fix them I will. However this is just constant.
Fortunately the landlord readily fixes things however what are other people's experiences? Is this normal in HK?

Maybe you are right.
Our place was newly renovated when we moved in and maintenance has been here at least once a month. Taps leaking and so forth. The landlord is perfectly happy to fix it.
I think that in HK it's just expected that maintenance is needed, so construction of interiors is not "to last" like you would see in Western Europe for example.

We were in a relatively new apartment (9 years old) when we moved here 5 years ago. Had constant problem in guest bathroom with water leaking from apartment above us. Our Landlord and the owner of the aparment above tried to fix it but it took them about 3 years on and off to get it done. In the end the owner upstairs pulled his bathroom out and renewed.
We have been in our new place for 1 year and have had no problems so far.
Other friends who have been in their apartment for more than 5 years have not had any problems.
Guess it depends on the age of your building and the quality of building material used in the construction.

yeh i suppose we just lucked out on this one. I really can't believe our bad luck as I do think we are experiencing an above average number of problems.
Our place is in an old building and has been totally renovated. We were told there were knew electrics, plumbing etc but they keep on breaking down aswell.
Just had the plumber leave. He had to fix a blocked pipe. Who knows what is next.
It gets a bit depressing after awhile. I actually feel quite stressed about the place but am trying to stay positive so that i can enjoy my time in HK.

Islandhopper and Gui: I do count my blessings that the landlord fixes things. The house would have been unliveable if things hadn't been fixed.
The place is bearable at the moment however when I go back home I don't relax as much as I would like as I am paranoid that I will enter the door and find something wrong.
I have a few overseas trips coming up which i am looking forward to so that i can get out of the house. However this whole experience has highlighted how important it is to have a nice place to live!

I think you're lucky for having a landlord who comes to the rescue every time you need him. But if something like that happens to me I'd start looking for another flat. Once is okay, but if it becomes a regular thing and begins to inconvenience my privacy and time, I'd go crazy. Really. I've never had that same kind of problem before.
