Hair advice needed - desperate!!!!

Hi all, I'm really hoping you could help me out here as I'm in a bit of a time sensitive situation and I don't really know what to do. About a month ago I decided to perm my hair (I should note that I'm caucasion and that my hair is longish and fairly thick and was in pretty good condition considering I'd had it straightened using that Japanese system at the "Hairdressers" - don't get me wrong they did an excellent job but I decided it was too flat a look for me and was really hankering for some awesome curls) at this local salon on Stanley street which mainly caters to Asian hair. Now I spent approx. $800 and 5 hours of my time to end up with...basically nothing!!! I mean my hair is just a little wavy and frizzy after I wash it (and I always use a very good conditioner afterwards as I know chemical treatments dry out your hair). I wanted actual big bouncing curls and it just looks kinky and wierd!! Now I guess my question is twofold 1) is there anything I can do to achieve my desired results at this point or do I have to wait awile before attempting another perm (at a different place obviously) and 2) if it is ok to proceed with another treatment where would you guys reccommend I go - I realize that I might have to pay significantly more for a proper stylist this time. As for the time sensitive thing - my brother is getting married in a month and I'm in the bridal party so I really really want my hair to look good...sigh... Any and all help you guys can provide would be so very appreciated!

Hi, firstly it does make a difference how long ago you had your straightening done. This will make a big difference to the possiblity of you being able to perm it or not. Generally after a japanese straightening a perm will not work but we have found if there is sufficient time between it is possible to achieve some curls. You would need a good few months between the process as a minimum.

If you have had enough time between the processes then there was a problem during the perm procedure itself. If you do want those big bouncy curls I can only assume you would need a digital perm and not a regular one to set the curls. If a digital or set perm was used then it may also be the fact that the machines was not hot enough or they did not have the correct solution for your hair type. There are many factors that can affect the results of perming.

Without seeing your hair I would say it is unlikely you can get your desired results without another process (if at all based on the straightening). Sometimes cutting the hair can help to revive curls if there are any but that also is dependant on your hair style. You would need some layers at least. This combined with a series of hair treatments could at least keep the hair in good condition and hopefully more managable.

I hope that is at least of some help.

Hi thanks for replying!! Well I got my hair straightened last July/August so it was about 9+ months between that and when I got my perm which is why I thought it'd be alright to try another chemical processs. Honestly don't know what kind of perm they used on me (it was extremely hot though!). Can you reccomend a salon that could offer me a good consultation on this particular issue (or alternatively do you work for a salon that is particularly experienced in this)? Thanks so much for your help!

Ok so that should be enough time to be able to get some curl happening. I am actually with The Hairdressers (where you had the straighten i believe) but I dont think the perm machine we have here would be the best for you. I do also work with the Fudge salon in Causeway bay and they have the right machines and experience with this. If you want to try it out i suggest you look for Bevis (yes his real name) as he is the most experienced with western hair types and these perm procedures. The number there is 28811664.

If you prefer something in Central let me know and I will find you a recomendation.

hi there

my hair is naturally curly (thin hair but tons of it) and they used to be sort of nice individual curls, but now after years of blow drying, pregnancies and HK's humidity, man they look like I got an electric shock from a socket. So here we go, I do not want them straighted as this looks too unnatural for me but maybe could I do a perm so I have them straight on top and then big nice shiny curls? If so where????

Hi Edleweiss, well thats a tricky one. Off hand without seeing your hair i would say no. The issue is that you would need to have the roots relaxed/straightened at the same time as having the mid length and ends curled. Now there are some of the set perm processes that could do this but it will not entirely get rid of all the frizz at the root. That said it should still be an improvement. I think you will need to approach this in a way that it will be better, easier to manage but maybe not perfect and may also not have that smooth shine. Of course you can then supliment with treatments and products to help compensate. Keep in mind this is also very dependant on your hair length and the amount of layers (sorry, there are so many factors to consider).

Anyways I hope that at least give you something to think about.

Highly recommend David at Il Colpa at the Grand Hyatt (awarded #1 salon in HK 2007). Pricey but ALWAYS worth it. I have very thin blond hair that is going gray. Even with these challenges he gets it right every time. I get a lot of compliments on my hair. His highlights are the very best. Have gone to him for 7 years and never been disappointed.

Yes I have to agree that David is a great stylist and a super nice guy but Il Colpo is by far not the #1 salon in HK its just that they are one of the most dominant palyers in the high end market. Due to their connections and financial backing they are able to secure very good sites that others are not able to and this helps them atracked alot of stylists. You have to admit it is always pretty chaotic in there but they do have some good people for sure.
