What are the regulations behind freelancing / consulting in Hong Kong? I am a permanent resident so have no visa issues.

Do I need to register somewhere? Seek a business registration?

Thanks!

well if you are going to consult business clients, you are going to need to invoice them for the work done and issue receipts for payments received. Some business's probably will not mind issuing cheques to individuals, but the vast majority will want to issue to a company instead, so you will need a company bank account. Registering a business is pretty easy, you just head down to inland revenue and they will guide you through it. I think its just a single page form (when I did it about ten years ago). Or better yet go see an accountant and have them set it up

Business Registration (Enquiries Tel. 2594 3149 or check out the website) should be able to confirm it's pretty much as DB writes above

and its pretty inexpensive to do as well, couple thousand bucks at most when I did it, though I think I read on here somewhere that the govt is waiving the fee this year on account of the surplus. Not sure how true that is though.
