Infant Toy Safety

I need advice....

A week ago we bought an infant toy (teether/massager) that is supposed to soothe my 6-month old baby. We excitedly gave it to him while he's on his cot and the next thing you know.... his mouth is bleeding, he got cuts on his mouth. We've got pictures and we went to the doctor as he couldn't feed properly and was crying non-stop. I've complaint to the store and i was passed around from one department to another and they promise that they will contact me. I still haven't heard from them until now.

If i've got the resources, I would like to sue them, but we are talking about one of the biggest baby/toy store in hk and I just don't know what to do next. I want a refund, compensation for the doctor's fee and sleepless nights and of course, for the product to be removed from the shelves. Can the consumer council help me or they will just waste my time?

What to do next?

I can't believe that Infant Toy Safety is seems to non-existent in HK.

Very worrisome; hope baby is feeling much better. You say that it was bought at one of the biggest baby/ toy store in hk. If this is the large toy group with many stores but also baby section, then you should report to their customer hotline asap. They do not intend to sell non-safety standard toys/ baby..... and will usually respond. You should also check on-line if this teether is under recall in other countries such as USA, UK, etc. You will need the product brand name to do this, and it is useful to have the information from the original packaging. IF the teether is under recall elsewhere ..... ie some problems have occurred...... the store will usually voluntarily remove all the goods. But you should also alert the Consumer Council.

IF the teether you bought is not truly branded, and perhaps just a China company with some nice packaging ........ these type of products are more likely to have safety problems. The quality control levels are not as high as the international brands who still have their problems, but they are truly concerned about product liability and have quite rigourous testing. Interntional brands must follow USA, UK or CE safety standards.... all high. But in HK a third generic standard is also allowed and the quality levels are not considered as good.

IF the teether is international branded, you should definitely report to their head office. Usually they have on-line contact us information on their website.

I would start with getting all the info to the company like Imcf suggests before talking lawsuit. If you start talking lawsuit the company will clam up and sic the lawyers at you. Give them a chance to set things right first.

The fact that the store wasn't much help is probably due to a fear of doing something wrong. Contacting higher-ups is more likely to get you the result you need.

I would suggest start by definitely talking to the top brass of the store, the owner of the store preferably..dont rest till the staff lets u talk to him...they have got to give u his details....write to scmp with the pics and tell the store u are doing so..that will sure make them stand up and take notice.
