Hey..what is this? I heard it helps bb to sleep.

1) is it a machine that creates natural noise, like water sound, bird sound, etc?

2) who is this white noise machine differs from simply playing a soothing music that helps bb to sleep too?

Currently, i switch on soothing music for bb to sleep all nite and block out (or rather minimize) other noise disturbances...

you can do it yourself by tuning your fm radio in between stations, so all you hear is static...we just leave the kitchen exhaust fan on...for our daughter, anything other than complete silence does the trick....if the soothing bb music is working for you, no need to change (personally i think the 'white noise' machine is a money grab)

agree - your A/C, a fan, air filter, dehumidifyer, etc... any appliance that is currently in the baby room produces some degree of 'white noise' - the concept is a continuous, repetitive, background noise.

We don't go out of our way to have 'static' playing, but in HK we had the AC on in the summer, and here in Beijing we have an air filter on in the kids bedroom (and ours), which produces a nice soothing, repetitive, sound... I like it when I go to sleep too!!

Many flats in HK, have loads of ambient noise from outside anyway!!

When we go on holiday, we don't do anything special, and they sleep just fine.

I agree that a good dehumidifier or static on the radio works. We have actually had great success with a breast pump of all things.

Unfortunately a lot of it is quite irregular, like car horns. ;)

axpatguy38, your comment made me snort into my tea -- the medela swing put our little one straight to sleep in his earlier days too! In fact, the same noise intimidated me and I switched to a handpump instead =p
