If we had jobs in Aberdeen, what would be a reasonably cheap place to live within commuting distance that would be good for expats with kids?

Lamma island, if you want more space and a quieter more relaxed environment. Ferries run from Yung Shue Wan to Aberdeen.

Hi

I think South Horizions may be a better choice, the rental is reasonable and they also have a club house which may be better for your children.

You don't say what you mean by "reasonably cheap". South Horizons is a great place to live with kids. Nicely landscaped with lots of playgrounds. It's on Ap Lei Chau, a tiny island just across Aberdeen Harbour. I live there and walk down to the harbour, catch a sampan over to Aberdeen, and then walk up to my workplace -- there are also buses every few minutes between SH and Aberdeen. Also on Ap Lei Chau are Marina Habitat and Sham Wan Towers where some expat families live.

There are apartments to rent in Aberdeen and Tin Wan, next door within walking distance of Aberdeen. Pokfulam is just around the corner to the west. Lots of apartments there, too.

But, what is your budget? Will you have a live-in domestic helper? This will have to be considered when choosing apartment size. Furnished? Unfurnished? Newish or older?

I recommend you stay somewhere temporarily and look at possibilities after you arrive. There are (?expensive) serviced apartments in Tin Wan (Abeo). Caritas Oswald Cheung International House in Tin Wan that is quite reasonable. You could stay there and spy out the land.

we live in South horizons for 3 years now and we like it here, for one thing we love the recreation center, you can mainly find the daily necessities here that you need, if so you can just hop in a bus or taxi to go to admiralty. The bus terminal is just around the corner. but I can say that rental in south Horizons is getting expensive, I still reckon when we first moved in here the smallest apartment cost 6K-8K/month, now you start from the 12K/month for the smallest apartment which is only net size of 550sq.ft.

If you are a family and want a better and bigger apartment, Lamma is a good choice, there is a ferry from Aberdeen to Lamma, for 10K/month, you have a nice place in lamma. For 1,000 sq.ft. in South Horizons now cost roughly 25K/month, excluding car park.
