How annoying, I would be angry too! Are you presuming everything has gone from your wallet or perhaps you have received your wallet with everything gone? If so, I assume the reason the person mailed it was because they wished to take some things out and remain anonymous but then I guess the question is why bother mailing an empty wallet - very annoying.
If I found one, I would call the person directly. Once before when I lost something and reported it to the police, I got a police report one year later saying they were looking into the matter and of course it was never found - what's the point!

What a pain in the behind...I've had a couple of wallets go walkies and one of them came back minus the cash from a good samaritan who found it; and another, I found on the ground about 100m from where I was pick pocketed...once again, minus the cash.
I've found 3 wallets before and in 2 cases I called the owner (found their phone numbers in the phone book from the name details on the drivers licence) and with the 3rd, I found it inthe supermarket so I handed it in at the main service desk as I figured the person was probably still in the store and would realise their purse was missing when they got to the registers to pay.
I agree with you that the person who posted it to you could have called 1st to say that they were posting it (even annon.) so to keep an eye out in the mail and It's a pain in the butt that it happened but at least you can be thankful that you didn't end up having to deal with having your credit cards used.

I wish when I (stupidly) lost my wallet on an Air Asia flight that the person who found it sent it to a police station. I would not have even cared if the cash was gone (and there was quite abit in different currencies) but had sentimental value... sticker photos of my little one at age 1 - irreplaceable! Thankfully my id card was not in there so one less card to cancel and replace.

My DH left his wallet behind in a taxi one night. When he called to cancel his credit cards he found that the finder had already cancelled the cards and left his name and phone number with the credit card provider for DH to call and collect wallet - with cash intact. An honest and sensible finder like this is rare though.

this is not about wallets.
a florist sent and left a bunch of flowers to the wrong flat but it was not indicated in the delivery which flat it was. so i called the florist and told them as i was busy, i would leave it out on my door where they left it as the doorman didn't allow it to be left in the reception area.
to make a long story short - after several phone calls (and some of them nasty from the florist), the florists wers't able to collect the flowers and even threatened to sue me!!!
it's so hard to be honest!

Shame re the loss of the wallet & the dramas of cancelling. Perhaps the finder was a local who spotted from your ID card you were a foreigner (now I'm guessing...) and didn't feel comfortable ringing you & trying to explain in another language they had found your wallet....or they were elderly & don't have internet access etc.
Re manners....
I spotted a bloke get up from his comfy chair in a Pacific Coffee place recently, and his wallet slid out of his pocket onto the chair. He didn't notice but I did. I grabbed the wallet & gave it to his companion who saw me wave out...she said thankyou, but the owner just looked at me as if I was a thief!!! I'm still cheesed off about his lack of manners. Saville Row suits do not a gentleman make.

I found a wallet just 4 weeks ago. It was early evening. There were 2 ID's in the wallet (HK and mainland china), no cash other than $20 and no obvious way of contacting the owner. I spent ages trying to get thru to a police station where i thought I would be able to report the find. Unfortunately they wouldn't do anything over the tel so Iwas fobbed and told to take it into one of their stations.
Which is exactly what i did. I took it to Wanchai headquarters where they kept me for 20 minutes filling in forms. I can see why people can't be arsed to take found property to a police station. However, I hope that if I ever lost my wallet someone would do that for me. Sentimental things etc.

Never foung the pouch (incl. credit card but also girly stuff as make-up i'd still like to get back) i once lost in a minibus.. contacted the minbus co, etc.
At least this person was honnest....
What i'd do would be to call your phone number on the business card, and ask you to come and pick it up from the nearest police station (where i would drop it)... and tell you of course the address of the police station.
That's it.....
unless paperwork in the police station look like they'll take ages, in which case i'll ask you to meet me in the police station with ID proof to pick it up... i guess....
But would definitely keep neither the wallet, nor the cash....

Just to let ppl know - handing over a wallet to the police is not at all time consuming or problematic. My husband found a wallet outside Prince's Building and we wanted to go to a police station to hand it over when we saw 2 cops walking by. So we literally just stopped them and told then we found the wallet and handed it over. They asked to see my husband's ID and took our phone number and address. In 2 minutes we were done.
We receive a formal acknowledgement from the police regarding the wallet a few days later AND a very nice thank you note from the person whose wallet it was.
So pls do hand over any wallet you find to the police...

i've had people return camcorders, wallets and i've done the same. i need all the good karma i can get and wouldn't accept any payment. once a man returned something and asked that i remember people of his ethnic background kindly and that would be his reward! some people are not honest.it is stealing if you don't return things you find!

My wallet got pickpocketed about a year ago in the Central Lanes. I lost about 3,000HKD and that i can live with (though really painful!). i can also live with the effort i had to put in into calling ALL the credit card companies and slowly trying to get back all my membership cards from different places/ groups, etc. But the pictures i had inside - i can't get back and i still feel the loss. I went back to the lanes to try and find it, hoping someone had taken the cash and tossed the wallet. No luck. The wallet itself was Celine so maybe the theif was brand-conscious! I filed a report with the police - i went at night to do this as i had a one month old baby at home at this point. It was a terrible experience!

Some people don't even have the decency to thank you when you do hand in stuff, I found a Rolex in the gym once, the previous guy who had used the locker I was using had left it in there. I handed it in to reception, and just as I was leaving, he had come in to inquire as to whether it had been handed in or not. He got his watch back, and the receptionist told him I had handed it in. To be honest the guy looked at me as if I was a thief, took his watch and left without saying anything. Even the receptionist commented at his rudeness. only in Hong Kong.
